SchoolNet Namibia was a local
hands-on ICT deployment, training and support organization, established
in February 2000 to empower youth through the Internet and provide
sustainable low-cost technology solution for Internet to all Namibian
schools.
SchoolNet Namibia was officially dissolved by its Trustees
and membership at a general meeting.on 17 July 2009.
In
the interest of keeping an historical record of SchoolNet's
(significant!) contributions
to Namibia's ICT and Education sectors, the Trustees of SchoolNet
agreed to keep SchoolNet web-site (and domain) alive for at
least two years following the official closure in 2009. Thereafter,
the plan is to redirect the contents of SchoolNet Namibia to
WikiEducator or another appropriate hosting service. It remains a grim reality that some 806 schools, 50% of Namibia's
schools, try to function without electricity and telecommunications.
It was therefore particularly ironic that SchoolNet's dissolution
came a day
after Namibia's Communications Bill, so long in the making,
was finally tabled in Parliament. Read more
